The Witness is best played from the perspective that the puzzles are the point, rather than just a way to unlock the next door or answer a mystifying question. In many games in this genre, the puzzles are a means to an end: You’re trying to get somewhere, like out of a prison cell, or do something, like rescue a kidnapped friend. The Witness is one giant, wonderful demonstration of the educational process For me, the puzzles were the carrot and the stick, and no game in 2016 wormed its way into my brain like The Witness. Because I care more about character than plot in a TV show, and I didn’t give a damn about why the island in The Witness exists or what devious puzzle lord - Puzzlord? - came up with its head-scratchers. I mean, you could do that, but I would recommend against it. Yes, there is a semblance of a story in The Witness, even though the game is free of text, and you can scour the internet for theories on what it all means - the pretentious audio logs, the shadow-casting statues, the underground theater and everything else. It’s also true that figuring out the solutions to those puzzles was one of the most challenging and enjoyable things I did in a video game this year. The key to both of them is combining the answers to the four puzzles you've solved to form an answer to the panel that's facing them. Most descriptions of The Witness are reductive, but then, perhaps that’s appropriate for a game that is literally nothing but drawing lines to solve puzzles.Īs my colleague Justin McElroy put it in his review, saying that The Witness is just maze puzzles is “like saying that a book is ‘just words.’” It’s true that the hundreds of puzzles littered throughout the alluring and confounding island on which The Witness takes place are all solved essentially the same way. You only need to complete one side of the Keep to active its laser. It's a symmetry puzzle with tetris figures, without additional difficulties. The final puzzle is quite straightforward too. Once the right tiles are glowing, continue your path as normally. You must step on it so that the tile lights up, and make a detour to the other side of the obstruction (use wooden platforms to avoid stepping on puzzle platforms and mess up the puzzle, and make sure a path past the obstruction is light up. The tricky part here is that there are some planks blocking a tile along the path. The third puzzle involves tetris figures. The right answer is one that avoids the broken platform. Tre tricky part is that there's a broken platform that prevents you from walking there, thus blocking the simplest answer. The second puzzle involves black and white squares. The first puzzle is quite straightforward, being just as simple puzzle with hexagon dots. If you somehow mess up, you can use the panel to reset all the tiles. You must walk on the nearby platforms, starting from the large circular platform - any tile sou step on will light the respective section of the panel, allowing you to input the answer. In the second set of mazes, there's no way to input the answer into the panels.
